The indie pop trio, LANY, is releasing its self-titled debut album later this month and it definitely does not disappoint.
LANY has been releasing singles and EPs over the years of its short existence that were always sure to bring images of beautiful sunsets and the smell of the ocean to mind while listening. The debut album encompasses this signature sound while including some new twists.
The album opens with a studio recording of a song that has been performed at previous LANY shows titled “Dumb Stuff” and it really sets the mood for what is to come in the next 15 tracks. As the album continues to play, it is hard not to dance along the way.
“Super Far” is the third track on the album and offers a new twist to the classic LANY sound that has been provided to various listeners over the years. The chorus along with the strong synthesizer makes for an unforgettable track early in the album. The lyric, “if this is love, I don’t want it” stands out throughout the song and acts as a strong statement at the very end of the track.
The next track, “Overtime” offers a toned down synth sound that has a fresh feel to it, along with lyrics that step outside of the box for LANY. The usual LANY song takes on a lighter feel with simple lyrics, which works for the group. However, the lyrics for “Overtime” are much moodier and showcase a different side of the lyricism for LANY.
This different feel comes back up on the ninth track on the album, “Hericane.” The sound of this track has a darker vibe to it that makes it hard to stop listening and leads to the listener being completely emerged in the sound. It is hard to not want to hear every bit of this track.
The calmness of the previous track is interrupted by the following track “Hurts,” however it is another track with impressive lyrics. The combination of relatable lyrics, Paul Klein’s vocal range and catchy beat makes for one of the best tracks on the entire album, alongside the track “Purple Teeth,” which is just a few tracks later.
LANY was a long time coming and ended up being a very solid debut album for the group. From start to finish, there was not a track to be skipped. Each track offered its own story and emotion that made a lasting impression each time.
The group released the music video for their single “Good Girls” and it offers an interesting twist at the end for any LANY fan. The guys will be kicking off their US tour in September this year.
